Product Overview: Melt Flow Index Tester for Thermoplastics

The XNR-400B Melt Flow Indexer is a dedicated test apparatus for determining the Melt Mass-Flow Rate (MFR) and Melt Volume-Flow Rate (MVR) of thermoplastic materials. It is engineered and manufactured in conformity with GB/T3682-2000, ASTM D1238-98, JB/T5456, ISO1133 and other relevant specifications.

For MFR measurement, automatic sample cutting is implemented; the cutting interval is regulated via PLC, and sample mass is acquired using an analytical balance. For MVR testing, a photoelectric encoder captures piston displacement alongside automatic timing. The system first records the duration for the piston to traverse a specified travel distance, then calculates the MVR value by applying the corresponding formula.

Both MFR and MVR test results can be visualized on the LCD panel and exported via the onboard micro printer. This unit delivers high measurement precision, user-friendly operation and consistent running performance.

It accommodates high-melting engineering plastics including polycarbonate, fluoroplastics and nylon, as well as low-melting materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, ABS resin and polyacetal resin. It finds extensive deployment within plastic manufacturing, petrochemical sectors, alongside accredited laboratories, research institutes and commodity inspection authorities.

Working Principle of MFR & MVR Testing

Melt mass flow rate (MFR) and melt volume flow rate (MVR) are obtained by extruding molten test material out of the plastometer barrel under predefined temperature and loading conditions.

To acquire the MFR value, extrudate fractions collected within set time intervals are weighed, and the extrusion rate is computed and documented in g/10 min.

For MVR testing, the system detects either the piston travel distance over a fixed duration or the time consumed for the piston to travel a designated displacement; the final MVR output is expressed in cm³/10 min.

A mutual conversion between MVR and MFR can be realized provided the melt density of the sample under the specified test environment is available.
